  • hi @fab - I have a bug for the App label in german with the latest 0.22-q that includes this commit. As the @ is escaped, the title is shown as is "@string/files_label" instead of "Dateien"

  • Thank you, @tcecyk, for pointing this out. But if I understand it right, it's a mistake on a higher level that the translation. The two concerned strings are: https://i18n.e.foundation/translate/e/android_packages_apps_documentsui_r/de/?checksum=f392d7a9d55245c5 and https://i18n.e.foundation/translate/e/android_packages_apps_documentsui_r/de/?checksum=3edaf2b69a78496e.

In both strings, the text to be translated is @string/files_label, which I copied as it is. So I don't know what I as translator could be doing better. Anyway, if you tell me how to correct the English string and how to translate it correctly, I will gladly do it!

  • until that is corrected within Weblate - to avoid the bug it's best left untranslated - it will fall back to values/strings.xml where the reference is proper. Can you set a string to "not to be translated"?

  • No, I don't have enough rights for that. I just can translate.

  • what does the Weblate xml export look like if you leave the field unfilled?

    • favourable case: will not export the xml element -> avoid the bug
    • nothing gained: Weblate exports as empty string "" and the label will be shown empty
  • I don't know, I never export. But can I just leave it blank, would this work better than copying the original string?

  • looks like if you leave it empty when it was translated prior, the export ("Files -> Download translation") contains it as empty elements, this doesn't avoid the bug yet

You could give them the german translations ("Dateien") instead of the reference, but that is not a longterm solution

  • Hmm, I just leave it empty for the moment... waiting for a better solution. ;)

  • Then it is a blocking issue for the 0.22 release.

    • beside values-de, values-ru is affected too
    • values-gd (Gaelic), values-cy (Welsh) has it translated, but the merged xml in git hasn't an escaped @

You could fix it within the git repo of course until weblate has a solution

  • @fab - proper translation is more important than fidelity to source files. As the translation helper Weblate can't handle it currently, if you agree: translate to "Dateien" to allow for one more development cycle to seek a solution with Weblate

@fab If I remove the @string and hardcode it to Files in values/strings.xml. That should do the trick?

  • I am a simple translator with no experience in coding... So I can't really answer your question. What do you think, @tcecyk ?

  • Nishith Khanna @nishithkhanna ·

@fab what I meant to ask was that the issue is there because in strings.xml the reference is @string right?

  • I prefer that @tcecyk answer your question, since I don't really understand that. But from the little I understand, that could do the trick. We can try it anyway and see what happens. Thanks for your concern!

  • @nishithkhanna it really is all in the comments here. Of course you can fix it in the xml, the escaping is the issue, but what does it help when it is reintroduced by @fab on Weblate exp/import. And as I said, there are other languages affected.

@tcecyk it will not be reintroduced becuase I will not use @stirng/app_label but Files in main strings so when it goes for translate the translation will be of Files and not @string/app_label
