This documentation intends to help Fairphone 3 users, still running /e/OS on Android 9. The goal is to to update their device to the latest /e/OS version.

A difference in the encryption system between Android 9 and subsequent android versions prevents this device from being upgraded to Android 10+ without a factory reset.

## Requirements

- A Fairphone 3 running Android 9

- a computer (Linux, Windows, macOS)

- a USB3 - type C cable

- some time : 2-3 hours

- /e/ OS phone

## Step 1: back up your data

It is not possible to make a direct backup of applications with the app data. We can offer an alternative to back up user installed apps. 

- For apps that sync data without an account, your settings won't be saved so you will have to define them again after the upgrade.

## Step 2: Update your Fairphone 3

We will now install the latest /e/OS version on your phone, using the Easy Installer. 

### Task 1: Install the Easy installer on your computer

Download and install Easy Installer from [this page on our documentation](https://doc.e.foundation/easy-installer).

### Task 2: Install the latest /e/OS update on your Fairphone 3

Start and use the Easy Installer, it will guide you in what steps to take. You should end up with a **fresh** installation (no data) of the latest version of /e/ OS for your device.

After the phone boots, complete the First Time Setup Wizard.
