No mobile network connection after upgrading from 1.20 to 1.21
- /e/ version: 1.21-t-20240323388918-stable-FP3
- Device model(s): Fairphone 3
- Developer mode enabled: yes/
no - Device rooted: unknown
- Trackers blocker enabled: yes/
no
Summary
After upgrading to /e/OS 1.21, my mobile network shows either No Service or Emergency Calls Only. I've tested calling my phone and the call does not get through.
Troubleshooting
- Removing and replacing the SIM card had no effect
- 'Preferred Network Type' > 4G or 3G had no effect
- Disabling 'Automatically select network' provided a list of phone service providers, but not mine (SMARTY) or the network they piggyback on (Three). All of the ones in the list said '(forbidden)'
- Selecting different APNs eventually added SMARTY and Three to the list of networks, but I couldn't connect
- Resetting device network settings allowed me to connect to very limited mobile data (mostly no connection, occasionally H+/empty bars bar enough to download a couple WhatsApp messages)
- Re-adding the APN suggested by my provider had no effect
- Deactivating Wi-Fi has no effect
- Deactivating roaming data has no effect
Before upgrading I had perfect network coverage everywhere in my house. Now I can barely get anything anywhere.
Solutions
Workaround
I need to revert to /e/OS 1.20, but it is not shown in the Updater screen which always used to be the case.
Solution
Going into my Phone Information settings and changing the value of 'Set preferred network type' from 'GSM/WCDMA/LTE (PRL)' (which is seems to have defaulted to) to 'LTE only' gives me 4G connection. There are loads of options on that dropdown and I have no idea what they are, but at least this gets the phone working again.
This post says 'LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM/WCDMA' is the best option, but doing so breaks my mobile network again and it defaults back to 'GSM/WCDMA/LTE (PRL)' when I change screens and come back.
'LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM' got me fleeting H+/H connection, 'LTE/TDSCMA' got me nothing. 'LTE only' seems to give the best results so far, but I'm not sure if using it means I'm going to be missing out on other features or have less reliable connection.
