Digital Well-Being / Screen-on time
- /e/ version: any

Summary
I am proposing a digital well-being feature within /e/OS. This could be developed in various stages, whereas a first stage could rely on already existing open source software.
Context: Android contains a well-being feature set (as Apples’ iOS does), it is an integral part of Android but not of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The digital well-being feature allows to visualise how the user interacts with his/her phone (screen-on-time, messages received/send) and supports the user (if wanted) to use the phone less and with more awareness.
The digital well-being feature within /e/OS could be developed with time. I imagine it as a separate section within the Settings menu (Digital Well-being) and a Widget.
-
1st milestone. The /e/OS Digital Well-being first could be simply a tool (widget) that measures the screen-on time of the user and compares it to the previous six days of the week (if sufficient data is available). This widget could be based on an already existing open source application (https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.markusfisch.android.screentime/) and would require mainly to design/implement a widget that fits to the /e/OS widget design.
-
Subsequent milestones could contain further improvements. Examples:
- Development if the Settings section (Settings > Digital Well-being). In this section the user could be enabled to tweak the information visible on the widget
- The user could be enabled to record screen-on time for a shorter/longer period of time (1 day, 1 week, 1 month). Whereas older user data should always be deleted.
- The user could be enabled to store the user data in the /e/cloud (opt-in).
- Integrating other features: such as most used apps, screen-on time for most used apps.
- Integrating settings that are already available (i.e. in the ‘Do Not Disturb’ section of Android S), those relevant setting should be made available as well under Settings > Digital Well-being.
Here first ideas how a Screen-on Time Widget could look like (2 mockups):
Additional remark: Developing a digital well-being section for me should not only imply an ‘technical’ agenda what features are developed when and by whom. Ideally, after milestone 1, I’d start a call among e/Murena users looking for a physiologist who is interested in the topic of digital well-being and interested in providing an additional input to the development team from a psychological what aspects would be important to take into consideration when further developing digital well-being within /e/.
