Feature proposal: Emergency SOS: Also send SMS to a contact in addition to emergency phone call
- /e/ version: from Android 12
- Device model(s): all
- Device rooted: irrelevant
In Android 12 there's a new “Emergency SOS” feature: When shortly pressing the power button 5 times or more, then the device will call a pre-selected phone number (something like 911 or 112 per default).
The proposed new feature
Now, I would find it very handy if there was an option to also send an emergency SMS (alongside the phone call) to a second pre-selected phone number, ideally including a customisable message and the current GPS location (GPS would need to be turned on).
Resources
This feature is available on Samsung phones running Stock Android.
Also, implementing it should be possible since there's an open-source app on F-Droid called FindMyDevice (source code on Gitlab) that includes very similar functionality: It is able to automatically turn on GPS and send the current location via SMS to a pre-selected contact.
While FindMyDevice needs special permissions granted via ADB, since it's not a system app, that shouldn't be necessary for the system's emergency feature as it is, in fact, pre-installed with system privileges, I guess.
