Front camera (LENS2) in direct sunlight splits channels in the default camera app
- /e/OS version: /e/OS 3.0.4-t-20250709507786-official-FP5
- Device model(s): Fairphone 5
- Impacted Application: /e/OS Camera
- Affected application/URL: Default Camera app (/e/OS/)
- Browser/client and version: Not applicable
The problem
When using the front camera (lens 2) on the Fairphone 5, photos taken in direct sunlight are corrupted:
- The image is split into two vertical halves. ** One half appears grayscale. ** The other half appears in reddish tones.
- In shadow or indoor light, the photos appear normal.
When using a different app (e.g., Open Camera), the issue does not occur → suggesting this is a software bug in the /e/OS/ Camera app or its camera HAL integration, not a hardware defect.
Images can be attached to illustrate:
- Image shot using the /e/OS Camera.
- The same image using Open Camera App.
Steps to reproduce
- Open the default /e/OS/ Camera app.
- Switch to the front camera (lens 2).
- Point the camera at a subject in direct bright sunlight.
- Capture a photo → the resulting image is split (half grayscale, half red).
- Repeat in shade or indoors → the image appears normal.
- Test in Open Camera app → photo is normal even in direct sunlight.
