Bluetooth calls not redirected to car hands-free system on Fairphone 6

  • /e/OS version: 3.1.2-a15-20250903521531-official-FP6
  • Device model(s): FP6
  • Impacted Application: /e/OS Dialer
  • Affected application/URL: Bluetooth calls
  • Browser/client and version:/e/OS 138.0.7204.179

The problem

Description:

On the Fairphone 6 running /e/OS 3.1.2-a15 (official), Bluetooth calls are not redirected to the car’s hands-free system.

Bluetooth music streaming (A2DP) works perfectly.

Phone calls (HFP) remain on the smartphone speaker, even though the “Phone calls” option is enabled in Bluetooth settings.

During a call, there is no possibility to manually switch the audio output to the car system.

This issue occurs on two different Fairphone 6 devices and in two different cars.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Pair Fairphone 6 with the car’s Bluetooth system.
  2. Place or receive a phone call.
  3. Observe that audio is not redirected to the car speakers (call audio stays on the phone).

Expected behavior:

Phone calls should be routed through the car’s Bluetooth hands-free profile (HFP).

Car microphone and speakers should be used automatically during calls.

Actual behavior:

Calls are not redirected: the FP6 uses its internal speaker and microphone.

Music via Bluetooth (A2DP) works fine.

Devices affected:

Smartphones:

Fairphone 6 (two different devices tested)

/e/OS version: 3.1.2-a15 official (Android 15)

Cars:

Seat Alhambra i-Tech, year 2014

Ford Fiesta Sync, year 2017

Additional information:

With Fairphone 4 on /e/OS 3.0.4-a14, Bluetooth calls worked perfectly in both cars.

This seems to be a regression with Fairphone 6 on Android 15.

“Phone calls” toggle is correctly enabled in Bluetooth connection settings.

Re-pairing devices, clearing Bluetooth cache, and restarting both phone and car did not solve the issue.

A Bluetooth HCI log can be provided if required.

Workarounds tried:

Re-pairing devices (phone ↔️ car)

Clearing Bluetooth data and cache

Restarting phones and car systems

Verifying “Phone calls” toggle is enabled in Bluetooth settings

Manually attempting to switch audio output during calls

→ None of these workarounds solved the issue.
