Photos taken from Fairphone camera are sometimes sent with a size of zero octets to Nextcloud

  • /e/OS version: 3.0.1-t-20250606498724-official-FP5
  • Device model(s): FP5
  • Impacted Application: ~
  • Affected application/URL: Fairphone Camera v6.00.04.0037.53.0
  • Browser/client and version: N/A

The problem

Describe precisely the problem you're facing and add screenshots to illustrate

When I take photos on my FP5, they get sent to the Nextcloud instance I configured on my device.

But some of them (around one quarter) have a size of zero octet on Nextcloud, while their size is normal on the device.

I can see the photo in the Gallery of my device, but the empty file obviously does not show the photo on Nextcloud.

It seems to me that this is specific to the Fairphone Camera. If I use the /e/OS standard Camera, I do not manage to reproduce the issue.

Please note that I have other users of the same Nextcloud instance, that also synchronize their photos from their /e/OS devices (FP3, Pixel6a). None of them have this issue: no empty photo file.

Steps to reproduce

  • Configure a Fairphone 5 to synchronize with a Nextcloud account, so that its photos are sent there
  • Install the Fairphone Camera (with the dedicated option of /e/OS)
  • Take a few photos (at least 10), and check the size of uploaded files on Nextcloud side

Workaround

From times to times, I connect my device to a computer where the Nextcloud files are synced, and copy/paste all my photos, to replace the empty files with their actual content.

Technical details

I checked the HTTP logs on Nextcloud side when an empty file is uploaded: nothing wrong. I see the PUT HTTP request of the file, and Nextcloud returns a 200 HTTP status.
