Notifications received several hours late
- /e/OS version: 2.8-t-20250219470165-official-FP3
- Device model(s): Fairphone3
- Impacted Application: all applications
The problem
Since the last /e/ OS update on my Fairphone 3, I've been having problems with notifications.
Notifications are not received in real time, are received minutes/hours late or are only received when I open the app in question.
It's as if the applications are no longer running in the background (or at least notifications are no longer checked if the application is not in focus).
I suspect a problem with MicroG or with the background operation of applications.
I haven't touched any settings or changed anything. Sometimes, restarting the phone brings up all (old) notifications at once. Future notifications are not displayed in real time, even after a restart. Sometimes, restarting the phone changes nothing.
Sometimes, when I go to the MicroG settings, in the applications that use real-time notifications, I get the wrong information.
For example, MicroG tells me that the last message/notification received by an application was an hour ago, when in fact it was 2 minutes ago. And indeed, I haven't received any notification for the message received 2 minutes ago.
When I go to MicroG settings, into "Cloud Messaging", “status” shows “Disconnected” (When I'm connected to the wifi). However, my phone works fine and is connected to wifi. When I use mobile data, everything works fine and the “status” of “cloud messaging” is “Connected since XX minute ago”.
If I'm on mobile data and I turn on wifi (in addition to mobile data) or switch to wifi (turning off mobile data), the status reverts to “Disconnected”.
Sometimes, on wifi, the status changes to “connected” but this is random, rare and doesn't last.
PS : Another option could be a network malfunction, as MicroG uses the network to check notifications. In my case, ever since the update, my phone regularly tells me it has no connection (when in fact it does) and it can no longer send messages (whatever the application). However, my connection is stable and functional, and I have this problem on all wifi networks without exception. I don't have this problem with mobile data.
Steps to reproduce
- Install the latest /e/ OS update, 2.8-t for Fairphone 3
- Turn on wifi / mobile data
- Go into "settings" -> "System" -> "MicroG" -> "Cloud Messaging" -> Check "Status"
- Use your phone normally
- You will not receive notifications in real time6.
