proximity sensor causes unusual high battery drain with WaveUp app

Summary

Using the app WaveUp (on F-Droid) with the proximity sensor causes a high battery drain.

This looks like a driver or hardware problem. See here:

Is there a chance to get this fixed?
I like the idea of switching on the phone by waving the proximity sensor, because it keeps the power button from wearing off.

The problem
