Samsung S9 (after upgrade to e.os 2.0): MicroG and Google Maps crash, no location/gps
- /e/ version: 2.1-s-20240603406609-stable-starlte
- Device model(s): SM-G960F
- Device rooted: no
- Developer mode enabled: no
- Trackers blocker enabled: yes
Summary
Starting with update to 2.0 (and persisting with 2.1):
-
MicroG crashes frequently ("MicroG has stopped working"), several times per hour
- with 2.0: the info note had to be actively clicked away
- with 2.1: the info note only flashes briefly
-
Google Maps crashes, no location, sometimes account not connected:
- sometimes the app is not finishing startup (only the large rainbow coloured location image is shown before crashing), has to be repeated 2-4 time before it runs without crashing
- the app (and no other app!) can get the location
- sometimes the Google account is not connected
- when trying to share the location (with family members), the info "location sharing is not enabled on the device", upon clicking "fix", after some time it stops with " not possible".
-
Google Family link sometimes crashes, sometimes no account connected.
Before 2.0, everything worked without any problem.

Workaround
Update: The "Trackers blocker enabled: yes" question in the upper summary section got me thinking... I disabled the tracker protection in the advanced privacy dashboard and then I got for a first time a correct location on my device after upgrading to e.os 2.x. After rebooting the device and turning tracker protection on again, I am still able to get a correct location in the Google Maps app. Solved? Could that short on/off tracker protection have done the trick?
Possible fixes
Thanks for looking into this! I was so happy with my degoogled S9 but with these issues it is hardly usable. Bye, Marcus
