Feature “Block Camera Access” does not block front camera

  • /e/ version: 1.11-s-20230511288805-dev-FP3
  • Device model(s): Fairphone 3
  • Developer mode enabled: yes
  • Device rooted: no
  • Trackers blocker enabled: yes (irrelevant)

Summary

When activating the feature “Block camera access”, apps can still access the front camera (selfie cam). The main camera (back cam) is blocked as intended.

The problem

Steps to reproduce

  1. Pull down quick settings menu.
  2. Set “Camera access” to blocked.
  3. Open camera app.
  4. In the popup that asks you to enable camera access, tap “cancel”.
  5. Switch to selfie cam.
  6. Take photo.

What is the current behavior?

Apps can access the selfie cam even if camera access is blocked.

What is the expected correct behavior?

No camera should be accessible to any apps.

Relevant screenshots

Note that the camera access is disabled before and after taking the photo. Also, I clicked on “cancel” when Android asked me to enable camera access. Pay attention to the camera preview initially remaining black (that's the back camera which is properly blocked).

In case you're wondering: What I'm holding up to the camera is Edward Snowden's autobiography “Permanent Record” ;)
