Signal messenger is (again) outdated on Apps

  • /e/ version: 0.23-20220406176461 (Android 9)
  • Device model(s): Fairphone 3
  • Device rooted: no

Summary

Signal is in version 5.35.3, says it's outdated and will expire in 3 days.

Apps does not provide any update for Signal. This /e/ version does not provide AppLounge (only Apps).

There is no /e/ OS update found in parameters.

The problem

Steps to reproduce

Take one of the first FP3 that were sold by /e/ foundation (with a "stable" /e/ version based on Android 9)

Install Signal (from Apps), and start it.

What is the current behavior?

Signal says it's outdated

What is the expected correct behavior?

Signal should stay up-to-date

Technical informations

I bought this device from /e/ foundation, pre-installed with a previous version of /e/ OS ("stable" channel): I did not install it myself.

Solutions

Add a download section at https://doc.e.foundation/support-topics/app_lounge.html, and publish here /dev and /stable APK.

Workaround

I did not try to upgrade Signal from Aurora Store: I suppose it would work, but I'd need Apps to keep it updated afterwards.

Possible fixes

In the short term, I suppose the apk needs to be updated in Apps store, like before: #5283 (closed) , #3782 (closed)

In the mid-term, an OTA OS update seems to be necessary to switch to App Lounge.
