mic/speaker not working

Summary
I installed /e/OS according to https://doc.e.foundation/devices/miatoll/install on the phone. When I tried to make phone calls, I realized that hands free speaking is not working at all: the mic simply turns off. And when I take a normal phone call, my contacts complain that I'm very soft. They cannot hear me.
The problem

Make a phone call or a call with a messenger. Turn on hands free speak and ask whether your contact can hear you.
What is the current behavior?
Mic turns off, speaker is also soft.
What is the expected correct behavior?
The contact should hear what I say load and clear. And vice versa.
