Red Mi note8 ginkgo receiving or make calls screen is blank / unresponsive

Summary

When receiving a call the screen wakes briefly, then goes blank and am unable to accept the incoming call. Also when making an outgoing call screen goes blank as soon as you dial to connect, then unresponsive

The problem

let the phone go blank after being on and make a call to the mobile number on the sim in the phone. I would estimate it occurs about 60-70% of the time. Out going call screen will blank every time and become unresponsive

What is the current behavior? As above

What is the expected correct behavior? Screen will stay on and am able to use the screen while on the call, eg pressing numbers for an automated call system.

Solutions

Workaround Have installed simple dialer which has fixed the incoming call issue to a degree, though the screen can still go blank sometimes and become unresponsive.

Possible fixes

No idea, I'm afraid. Though I can advise that on the Mi8 with the native phone dialer it functions as expected for incoming and outgoing calls.
