HTC 10 : SIM Card not detected, IMEI unknown

  • /e/ version: e-0.14-n-2021013099019-dev-pme
  • Device model(s): HTC 10 2PS6200

Summary

Hello, thank you very much for your work ! I managed to flash my old HTC 10 with /e/ but I can't get my SIM Card detected, neither the IMEI number displayed.

The problem

Steps to reproduce

Following every steps described here : https://doc.e.foundation/devices/pme/install

What is the current behavior?

When rebooting with a SIM Card inserted after /e/ successful installation the phone boots well, I can go through the "Getting started" traditional configuration screens, one of them saying "SIM Card missing". If I keep going through the process I eventually reach to the desktop and can get nearly everything to work fine, wi-fi, bluetooth... but the logo in taskbar still indicates "No SIM Card" and I don't have access to any mobile network, neither to the IMEI number :

  • When trying to dial *# 06# to get it the Phone App crashes with following message "Phone has stopped" and a constant beep noise
  • if I look into "About Phone / Status / IMEI information" to read it it displays "IMEI : Unknown", "IMEI SV : Unknown" In the SIM Status menu all options are Not available

What is the expected correct behavior?

The phone should detect the SIM Card and connect to mobile network when started.

Workaround

First of all, the SIM Card is not the problem considering that it works fine on other phones, and none of the various SIM Cards inserted in the HTC were detected. The HTC 10 is known for the weakness of the electrical contacts of the SIM Card housing so I tried the trick to put adhesive tape on the back of the SIM Card to make it slightly thicker, but it did not work. Looking online for any tips, and considering SIM Card AND IMEI issues I thought that the EFS partition might be in trouble so I restarted the whole installation process several times without any changes. I finally tried to install LineageOS (lineage-17.1-20200823-UNOFFICIAL-pme) to see if it was more of a HW or SW issue and surprise : it works perfectly on Lineage. No trouble detecting SIM Card, and it reaches the mobile network within seconds. Phone calls and texts are fully operational, and I can get the IMEI both ways (dialing *# 06# or in the Phone Status menu). As a result, the issue seems to be more of a SW problem. As the EFS partition seemed finally either intact, or repaired (or out of the table since the beginning) I tried to re-install /e/ following the instructions. And I got the same result, no SIM Card detected, no IMEI available. At this point I'm out of ideas or solutions. I hope it will help you fix the issue.

Best regards, Val
