gigaset gs 290 echo on hands free bluetooth mode in a car

  • /e/ version: 0.13-q2020121590520-dev-GS290
  • Device model(s): Gigaset GS 290

Summary

If I connect my phone with my car over Bluetooth and try to have a call, I always hear myself with a strong echo. The echo is so strong that conversations are impossible. My interlocutor only hears noise but can not understand what I am saying. This behavior is only happening when using my phone's dialer. If I try a Whatsapp or Signal call, everything works fine.

The problem

Steps to reproduce

Connect the phone over Bluetooth to a car and call somebody. Initiate the call using the vehicle's hands-free system or the dialer app. Do a "normal" call over the car's microphones and speakers. Don't try a call over Whatsapp or Signal.

What is the current behavior?

The car speakers repeat every sound the microphones pick up regardless of whether its speech or anything else. Thus, a strong echo is present, I can hear myself and any other noise from the car again and the person I'm calling only receives noise but not my voice.

What is the expected correct behavior?

The call should work as usual with out hearing an echo on my side.

Technical informations

Relevant logs (adb logcat)

Unfortunately, I cannot connect my phone with my computer while sitting in my car to run the adb logcat command. Therefore I didn't send you any logs.

Relevant screenshots

As the problem is related to audio, a screenshot cannot provide more details of the present behavior.

Solutions

Workaround

I haven't figured out a way to bypass the described behavior so far. The only option of having a call over the vehicle's hands-free system is to have a call over Whatsapp or Signal. But therefore I have initiate the call on my phone and not via the vehicle's hands-free system or have to be called.
