Verifying network connectivity with google servers
Verifying network connectivity with google servers
Summary
Some Wi-Fi providers and carriers require one to log in to their website before they allow internet access. In such a case before the internet connection is available, /e/ tries to contact google servers in order to test if internet connection is available.

Steps to reproduce
- Physically place the device in a location where it is required to log into the providers website. For example many airports provide such a functionality.
This situation is indicated by an X in the lower right corner of the Wi-Fi symbol:
- Then a notification pops up which says "Sign in to network". This notification displays also the name of the network provider (grayed out in the screenshot).
In the case of Wi-Fi the popup looks like this:
- Tap on the notification and a screen appears with an indication, that the device tries to establish a connection to a google server.
The first time I noticed this behavior, the device tried to contact a different google server.
What is the current behavior?
The device indicates that it tries to contact google servers in order to verify if an internet connection is available.
What is the expected correct behavior?
The device should use non-google servers for connectivity checks.
