- Device model(s): Samsung Galaxy S5 (klte)
- Developer mode enabled: no
- Device rooted: no
- Trackers blocker enabled: yes
## Summary
Encoding not always respected for album name.
For some MP3 files, album name encoded as UTF-8 string, is read as ISO-8859-1 string, whereas for others it is read as UTF-8, which results in an incorrect display as string contains characters encoded with 2 bytes.
## The problem
**Steps to reproduce**
- copy the two following files onto your phone:
![06_Au_ras_des_pâquerettes](/uploads/ea049c491e31fd0d4fb12c205e8d3571/06_Au_ras_des_pâquerettes.mp3)
![10_Caterpillar](/uploads/c8552ac5e2291e1cbc0ac79c9178d478/10_Caterpillar.mp3)
- in Music app, in Artists tab, select "Alain Souchon"
**What is the current behavior?**
Album name is "Au ras des pâquerettes" for a song, and "Au ras des pâquerettes" for the other one.
**What is the expected correct behavior?**
Music app fully compliant with UTF-8 tags, and display "Au ras des pâquerettes" for both songs, as they have same data for album tag.
Album tag (TALB) is identified as UTF-8 according to binary data (03 value at position 11):
54 41 4C 42 00 00 00 19 00 00 **03** 41 75 20 72 61 73 20 64 65 73 20 70 C3 A2 71...
Checked with MusicBrainz Picard, if encoding set to ISO-8859-1, 03 is replaced by 00.
Encoding does not seem to be taken into account.
Note that ID3v2.4 format is used.
Even if the album name is not interpreted as the same, there is only one album with the bad name (see picture), but for some other albums, it leads to duplicate album, one with the correct name and the other with bad one.

## Summary
When the music files are stored on a SDCard, add them to a playlist, makes the window of the Music app disappear. The app itself is not closed and continues to works. A pop-up saying app has crashed can appear (while it's not completely true: window has crashed). The music files are not added to playlist.
If same files are stored on internal phone memory, they can be added to playlist.
## The problem
**Steps to reproduce**
Put some music files on you SDCard. The SDCard is not set as an extension of storage for phone, but as external storage.
Open Music app and try to add the music files to the play list.
**What is the current behavior?**
The Music app crashes and files stored on SDCard can't be added to playlist.
**What is the expected correct behavior?**
No crash of the Music app and be able to add music file to playlist even if stored on external storage.

## Summary
When I play a music for the first time with spotify for example, the media player works normally.
Then if I stop listening to music, kill spotify app etc. and start to listen to music again later, the media player does not appear in fixed notifications.
And if I fully scroll to bottom to see it, it is stuck on the previous song and is not synced anymore with spotify
## The problem
**Steps to reproduce**
- Play a song with Spotify
- Stop the music
- Kill the app
- Relaunch spotify app and restart a music
- The media player does not appear
**What is the current behavior?**
The media player does not appear when playing music for the second, third, ... time
Fun and strange thing, I can click on play / pause and it works, but the player still shows the previous played sound (see the recorded video, it shows Roddy Ricch but I am listening to bbno$)
**What is the expected correct behavior?**
The media player should be visible when I scroll down to see notifications, and it should be synced with the currently playing music

- Developer mode enabled: no
- Device rooted: no
- Trackers blocker enabled: yes (default)
## Summary
- Usage of the default music-app (mp3-music locally stored on the device) combined with an external wireless Bluetooth device (speaker/headphones)
- Once the screen has turned-off, the app continues playing music.
- After a little while the app stops playing
- Still, the app continues working and counting the track time - although the track ended.
## The problem
**Steps to reproduce**
- Fresh install of e-1.8-T on Bluejay) (other devices not tested yet)
- Connection to an external Bluetooth device (tested with speakers and headphones)
- Installing mp3-music onto the device
- Start playing the music with the default music app (no settings tweaked).
- After a while the screen turns off.
- A little later music stops playing
**What is the current behaviour?**
When the music stops playing the user may turn the screen back on.
It appears that the music app is still running and counting up the playback time of a song although it might have ended.
(curiosity: I stopped a track playing 'silently' at minute 55:10 - although the track length is only 3:04 mins)
Once I press the FWD button, the music app is playing correctly (not silently) the next song. Then they behaviour starts at the beginning
- The behaviour can be observed no matter if random or sequential track order is being selected.
- Playback stops not necessarily at the very end of a track.
- The issue does not appear when mp3 music is played with the music-app while using the built-in speakers.
- The issue does not appear neither when the screen remains switched-on.
**What is the expected correct behaviour?**
The music app should play music until a playlist has been played entirely or the user stops playback manually.

## Summary
When selecting "Play" from the menu within an album in the Music app, it plays random order
## The problem
**Steps to reproduce**
1. Open the "Music" app
2. Navigate to an album with several titles (in my case, the album is located on the external SD card, in case that matters)
3. Confirm that the titles/songs of the album are displayed in the correct order
4. Select "Play" from 3 dots menu
5. The app correctly starts playing the first title/song, but then...
**What is the current behavior?**
When a title/song has finished, the app changes to an *arbitrary* followup title/song with the album, i.e. the second *played* title/song will typically not be the second title/song from the album. It appears that the behavior is identical to "Shuffle album" with the exception that first played title/song is indeed the first one from the album.
When restarting the app, and repeating the above steps, the app uses a different random order than before (except for the first title/song which is always played first).
**What is the expected correct behavior?**
All titles/songs from the album should be played in the order stored in the album.

## Summary
(Please note that all strings are shown in German, the translation into english is mine)
The music app does not respond to play events, sometime sub menus pop up (e.g. on the right side of a song), but then touch events for play are not accepted. Others, like "delete" or "add to album" seem to still work. After some attempts, Android informs me, that "Music is repeatedly "terminated, and I can select "App information" or "Close app". However, this window sometimes vanished.
If we remove the cache, nothing changes.
If we remove the App data, Music works as expected for some time, then the symptoms re-appear.
(Removing the App is not option, as it is preinstalled).
## The problem

Music always plays when a song is selected.

## Solutions
**Workaround**
Accepting phone calls with wired headset.
**Possible fixes**
I am not a programmer or coder so please excuse my ignorance. Look at the code used in Android 10 that phone calls used for changing the audio source, compare that code to the current version.

## Summary
[Eleven](https://gitlab.e.foundation/e/os/android_packages_apps_Eleven) is currently used as default Music App in /e/. To quote the commit https://review.lineageos.org/c/LineageOS/android_packages_apps_Eleven/+/271599 for disabling the search function:
> Eleven: remove search feature
>
> Thanks to the new mediastorage API we can no longer provide this feature on android 10+, not without its complete rewrite
(He's either referring to the storage access framework or MediaStore API)
## The problem
no search function
## Technical informations
Search is a basic function of a music app, as scrolling through A->B sorted views is cumbersome. The Files App offers a search field, but this is not the first goto. Even a bare bones default Music app should include search.
Higher Android target api levels restrict file/media access and provide new APIs. It's an obstacle for existing music player apps to adapt. Android 11 brings back some functions to access filepaths in https://developer.android.com/about/versions/11/privacy/storage#media-file-access
## Solutions
**Workaround**
Install any other Music App with a search function. For FOSS: [Vanilla Music](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/ch.blinkenlights.android.vanilla/), [Shuffle+](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.simplecity.amp_pro/), [Vinyl Music Player](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.poupa.vinylmusicplayer/), [Music (alt)](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.maxfour.music/)
**Possible fixes**
* Reimplement search in Eleven or
* evaluate current alternatives source code, if they use "future proof" APIs and given feature parity (tagging, album covers, etc) if there are fork candidates
